How to draw hair in charcoal is one of the most challenging to learn. Before I even knew how to draw hair renderings, I myself was curious to know how to create this realistically. I did not stop practicing until I perfected doing this. I invite you to see my hair drawing and shading tutorial in charcoal renderings. In these series of steps you will learn in detail easy ways to render and shade the hair. I recommend this book because it is a great example where you can learn the different ways to draw the face and also the hair. In addition, this portrait tutorial video Radiant Portraits in Colored Pencil (w/ Kerry Brooks) is a great mix to strengthen your knowledge in portrait drawing in color especially in drawing the hair. I highly recommend them!

At the end of this portrait case study (Step-23 Girl) post, you will be able to watch my free video tutorial about this topic. After watching it, I recommend that you follow my next video so that you can continue learning the complete steps to render the hair. If you miss the earlier steps of this tutorial case study please check them here.

HOW TO DRAW REALISTIC HAIR – EASY AND BASIC STEPS

1. First figure out the general shape and form of the hair. how to draw hair easyAn example is if the person in the photo have bangs and the general shape of bangs could be rectangle in a horizontal position across the forehead. Draw this using a pencil with a lighter shade.

Then locate the general shape of the right and left side group of hair in the head which could be an imaginary horizontal rectangles on both right and left side of the head. Draw them respectively.

2. Then fill up inside each of those general shapes with a few line strokes using a pencil with light tone to simulate the hair strands of the hair in the photo.

3. Observe carefully the hair strands and make sure they are balance according to the light and shadows in the photo.

4. Clean up the basic hair drawings by erasing the unnecessary sketches before applying the shadings.

HOW TO SHADE HAIR REALISTICALLY IN DETAIL

As you noticed this topic is the continuation of the basic hair drawing mentioned above. We will go deeper in this hair shading tutorial.

1. Remember I mentioned earlier to identify the major shapes of the hair parts like the bangs which show an imaginary rectangular shape. It is very important that you fill up each major shape that you find, with a medium tone shade using a big round white bristle brush by dipping it on a powder charcoal.

2. After doing that, you will have an even tone of shades in all the major shapes you identify. Next render the small hair strands around the head especially by starting it with the bangs as it is shown in this case study.how to draw hair step by step for beginners

3. Using a small tiny round white bristle brush, apply each individual hair strands by dipping it in the powdered charcoal. You can start with the upper part of the head which is the bangs as in this case study, then add some in the right and the left side of the head where you can see some hair strands.

4. Then once you are done with these hair strands reapply again some shadings by blending it from the top to the bottom of the head and from the left to the right side and vice versa. Apply this to as many layers as you can until you reach the point where it is very dark. I suggest that you watch the video below to understand clearly what I meant.

5. Then your next step is to work on the hair highlights. To do this grab a kneaded eraser. Check out your photo and see the areas where there are hair highlights then copy those highlights by doing some strokes using the kneaded eraser in each of the hair strands.

It is quite challenging to learn how to draw a portrait if we don’t know also how to draw realistic hair step by step which is important in the overall feature of the face. I did sketch the face carefully from the beginning using a grid and shaded them slowly until it reached the desired tones and shadings.

I realized that to draw and shade a portrait is not complete if we don’t really know the skills and tricks in drawing the hair. Some of the obstacles to encounter is if the hair does not look real we tend to search for the correct techniques and there is no where to find it. In addition, if the hair strands do not seem to flow life like and do not resemble the natural look. We become discouraged and hopeless. In this free video tutorial you will discover the hidden secrets.

This is the continuation of my portrait case study (Step-22 Girl). You will learn how to apply shadings to the hair and how to make it look realistic. I will be using charcoal to render the hair but in a powdered form. You will see me using it from the start. This type of technique will give a photographic effect as if the hair looks real.
